Hypoallergenic Cat Food Archives

I took my cat in to the vet because he had little red bumps from his tail leading up to the middle of his back. He has been licking them and cleaning himself more than usual. And in the process, coughing up hair balls for the first time in his life. And unfortunately, its causing the hair on that part of his back to thin and become more coarse. Hes strictly an indoor cat and is on flea and tick meds. The vet said she thinks its either a food allergy or a flea bite allergy.

She put him on a 2 week course of antibiotics and suggested i switch him to a hypoallergenic diet. I told her that my boyfriend and i are broke students and really cant afford that at the moment. She said that she understood, and said that if this doesnt work completely, to bring him back and she’ll test for food allergies.

Hes been eating Aldi brand dry cat food for almost 2 years now and he loves it. When i open a new bag, hes eating it even as i pour it into the plastic storage bin. (mind you, he doesnt have a set eating schedule, so theres always a bowl of food out)

He is 3 years old and fixed. He never goes outside, and he rarely gets any table scraps. He occasionally gets a piece of cheese or chicken, but only when the chicken has been boiled with no seasonings or sauces. We’ve tried giving him boiled chicken for a while but its too expensive and i honestly dont have the time to boil chicken 2-3 times a day.

Whats the best and or cheapest way to treat this problem? Can we just switch him to the aldi canned food, or any other type of canned food? Is the allergic reaction more common in dry food?

I just need some help and advice for a broke student trying to do whats right for our pet. Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Cat with chronic diarrhea?

"My cat has had chronic diarrhea for 3 months.

She was on Hills I/D dry food for about 6 weeks which produced diarrhea about once a week.
She was then put on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dry food and has been on that for 5 weeks – this produces a mushy but non smelly soft stool approx 3 or 4 times a day.
She has also been on predisonel for about 4 weeks and down to 1/3 of a 2.5mg tablet a day. She has also just finished a course of Septrin. Those are the only two medications she has had.

She has the odd good stool day but quickly reverts back to bad and seems to be getting worse. It just squirts out and very loudly as if gas there too. I have seen her sort of inwardly belching at times too. Otherwise she is perfectly bright and healthy. The presidonel obviously gives her a big appetite and she eats a lot.
I live in a remote area of spain and my vet seems to have come to a dead end for ideas. We still have no idea what is causing this problem.

It may be coincidence but trouble started after she and her sister were neutered and shortly after I tried to switch them over to adult food – both cats had diarrhea and I quickly stopped and that was when vet prescibed Hills I/d.
Her sister’s diarrhea cleared up and has never returned.

She was last wormed 3 months ago and a fecal sample about a month ago showed no parasites.

I just wondered have you any clues as to what the problem is or where we should go from here?

I am tempted to pull her off the hypoallergenic diet as it has only accelerated her diarrhea, and switch her over to a grain free diet. Do you know of cats that have been allergic or had bad results to this hypoallergenic diet?

Why is my cat scratching herself to death?

3 years ago she started having skin problems, vet said it was cat acne, put her on antibiotics, got better until antibiotics ran out. Put her on a fish free diet and she was fine for a year, eating wellness brand cat food. Then it started again so I switched to a new food "Eagle Pack, duck and oatmeal formula" she was fine for another year and it started again. Now its been 8 months of constant scratching and chewing herself. Got a new vet but the same treatment with the same results. She lives in a cone now. It’s very sad, I want her to be a happy kitty she is sooo lovable but kinda gross with the open wounds. She doesn’t have fleas, we have moved twice so I don’t think it’s environmental, doesn’t eat out of plastics and I have removed many plants from the house in case she was eating them. I have tried switching foods again with no change, for a week she has been on a "hypoallergenic food", still too soon to see a change. Any ideas or common experiences would be appreciated

Is there any way to make a cat hypoallergenic?

I was wondering if there was any way I could reduce the allergenic properties of a cat? I know they "engineer" hypoallergenic cats, but they are ridiculously expensive. I was wondering if there was anything I could put in the kitten’s food, or a kind of shampoo or something that would make it better? My roommate is allergic to cats but I really really want to get a kitten.
Actually, in response to one person, there IS a hypoallergenic cat…

Also, thanks to the people who have respectfully told me that the Allerca cats are a rip-off, rather than trying to insult my intelligence.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem? He is a picky eater, but seems to like the turkey based food. Won’t touch the hypoallergenic diets. Tried them all. Also has a sensitive tummy – doesn’t handle canned food very well. Would appreciate any wisdom on this.

Is anyone struggling with a fat cat?

My cat has allergies, and is on steriods for them and has to have hypoallergenic food. He cant eat fat cat food, so his weight has been a constant struggle.

Two weeks ago I let him taste my cantelope and he is hooked on it, so he gets a little bit of cantelope a day, between feedings when he is determined he HAS to eat something. He gets 3/4 cup of his food a day, spaced out three feedings.

Since he started on the cantelope he is losing weight ! And is more content, less yowly – and he loves it.

Does anyone else have a cat who likes fruit? He used to eat banana but he gave that up for cantelope. The vet said there is no reason not to give it to him.

He also likes squash and broccoli stems, steamed.
He gets a treat with his pill, tuna treat, he is allergic to cooked beef and pork, ham all the obvious things with nitrates in them.

He is crazy for the cantelope !

So its working well for him, I also grow grass in containers on the balcony for him. He likes a a little "grass salad" after his dinner :-)

And he loves to play in water, like a sprinkler or a fountain, get wet under the bathroom tap – then he has to be dried of course.

I think he was raised with dogs, I got him from the humane society when he was about 10 months old

He used to stalk the deer outside the fence before I moved here, (he is an ambitious critter – dreams big) and he prefers to play with balls that are big enough to tackle. 9 inch bouncy ball, preferably yellow

He tackles my son’s female lab and wrestles her to the floor and holds her there while he cleans her ears for her.

Yah I know, he’s weird.

How do i stop my cat from scratching?

She scratches so badly that she has broken almost all of her whiskers off, and she has several open sores. She probably has allergies, to what i’m not sure. I’ve already switched to a hypoallergenic cat food.
I have taken her to the vet, her answer was allergies. i give her a bath about once a week, the next day shes back to scratching. she drinks out of a stainless steel bowl and ive checked her for fleas.

I know that this question has been asked before, and the usual answer is to mix old food with their new food, but that is NOT an option for me. My cat developed a food allergy and can no longer consume what he ate before.

I bought California Natural, both wet and dry; but he refuses to eat it so I have to force feed him by watering the wet food down and forcing him to eat it through an eyedropper.

My other cat will eat it; but the amount she consumes has drastically dropped.

First Question is, how can I get my cat with the allergies to eat his new food, without giving him the old food that made him gravely ill in the first place?

Second question, how can I encourage my other cat to eat more of the new food?

Thank you.

Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Dr25 cat food?

My cat (11 human years of age) have always been getting loose stool, so vet prescribed Pred and Enzyplex for her, I gave it to her, her stool gets better, so I lessen the Pred to once each other day then, now it’s each every two days (vet says it’s good to lessen the Pred intake if she respond well), but seems now her loose stool came back. I am gonna go back to once each other day for that Pred intake, but at the same time I wanna try the dry food vet gave me (Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Dr25 cat food), coz I want to see if it’s the dry food I gave her (common Whiska’s dry food) that’s causing her loose stool’s problems. Apart from dry food we did feed her small fish (plain boiled) in the morning and some canned food in the afternoon (to mixed the Pred in it if not she wont take the meds).
Anyone’s cat tried this Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Dr25 cat food before? Is it good and can it be fed as main dry food source? Also, meanwhile I already stopped the Whiskas dry food for her. Thanks
♥shelter puppies rule♥ : Am not saying Pred causes it, just thought maybe it’s too soon to for her to go for once every two days. Yeah that’s what I heard too, Pred’s not good to take for long term. So now am trying with this RC cat food, and of course it’s better stuff than whiskas, it’s more costly brand :) . If she respond well to this cat food I might get it for long term and dump Whiskas forever. Still monitoring. Thanks.
RuneAmok Souls Eetser :Yeah vet did mentioned there might be many causes, IBD or even diet, she’s trying out the Pred, plus the Enzyplex, and also the 2 free packs of RC Hypoallergenic Dr25 cat food. Cat’s been on loose stool for a couple of years, it’s an on and off thing, but coz she show no sign of distress nor pain and still looked happy so we didn’t bothered much. Recently the other older cat passed away, and my this cat gets bit depressed, so I brought her to the vet, and talk about her bowels too, thus those meds. Now her diet consists of (morning) boiled fish, (afternooon) canned food (tuna, salmon with jelly etc), and also the dry biscuits (Whiskas and now Dr25. I’ve never let my cat try other types of meat (ie.chicken), it’s always fish based, not that adventurous coz I won’t want to upset her sensitive stomach. She’s been on dry food since young, think it’s better I have an dry food option for her, what would you suggest for a start? Could you also recommend good canned food?

We don’t know for sure what the allergen is at this point, we want to try a different food and see if it helps, if it doesn’t then the vet will do further tests.
